Computacenter gets the green light

Press release: 18 July 2003

Computacenter's environmental management policies have received an official thumbs up from the British Standards Institution (BSI).

The IT infrastructure services company was today presented with the international environmental standard ISO 14001 by accredited agency BSI Management Systems. The award covers all the company's UK operations and offices, and specifies a process for controlling and improving a company's environmental performance, which helps organisations identify how their activities impact the environment.

Mike Norris, Computacenter's Chief Executive, commented: "Managing the impact of our business on the environment is of great importance both to Computacenter and to a number of our customers. By gaining this registration we can be certain that our environmental policies comply with current legislation, and that we have been benchmarked against a globally recognised standard."

Mark Barthel, Head of Environment, Sustainability and CSR for BSI, added: "Computacenter has made substantial improvements to its environmental policies through recognising the importance of sustainability in the IT sector. BSI congratulates Computacenter on its ISO 14001 Award which will help the company to deliver business and environmental benefits."

The registration covers Computacenter's procurement, storage, configuration, supply, recovery and safe disposal of IT systems. The Environmental Management System will be audited every four months by the BSI, to ensure ongoing compliance and continuous improvement.

"Computer equipment contains hazardous waste, so it is essential that IT companies in particular develop Environmental policies and implement processes to control the recycling and disposal of IT equipment," added Norris. "In 2002 Computacenter supplied more than 12 million computing components to its customers, who can now be assured that this was carried out in an environmentally sensitive manner."

The need to demonstrate environmental awareness has grown considerably in recent years - in 2002, Computacenter received more than 100 requests from organisations wanting to check the company's environmental credentials. "Achieving the ISO 14001 provides external recognition of our existing environmental standards and processes, and will help us manage waste and improve performance," added Norris.
